When people start thinking about improving their home, the first thought is often:
“Where can we extend?”
But adding more square metres isn't always the answer.
Sometimes a home already has enough space, it simply isn't being used as effectively as it could be.
That's exactly what we're exploring with one of our current residential projects in East Sussex.
How Can You Improve Your Home Layout?
A few weeks ago, we presented our initial concept design layouts to the homeowners.
The aim is to explore how the existing layout can be opened up and reconfigured to better suit modern family life.
That means looking beyond individual rooms and considering how the whole house works.
How do you move through it?
Where does the family naturally gather?
Are there spaces that rarely get used?
Does the kitchen connect properly with the living areas?
Could natural light travel further into the house?
And could changing the layout make the home feel considerably bigger without necessarily adding a large extension?
Why We Explore Different Layouts to Improve the Layout?
The concept stage gives us an opportunity to test ideas before a design becomes fixed.
Moving a doorway, opening up a wall, changing how rooms connect or reconsidering the position of key living spaces can sometimes completely alter how a home feels.
Rather than designing around how a house has historically been used, we can start with a much simpler question:
How does the homeowner actually want to live and how can we improve the home layout?
From there, we can begin developing a layout around them.
Bigger Isn't Always Better
An extension can absolutely transform a property, but good residential architecture isn't simply about adding as much floor area as possible.
It's about making the space work and improving the layout.
A well-considered reconfiguration can improve circulation, natural light, connections between rooms and the relationship between the house and garden.
In some cases, making better use of the existing footprint can also allow a homeowner's budget to be focused where it will have the greatest impact.
What Happens Next?
With the initial concepts presented, the next stage is to develop the preferred direction with our clients and begin refining the design.
